I agree with the point about the marathon trials. Similarly I think USATF outdoor nationals/olympic trials has massive untapped potential to become a week long track and field festival that leads into the finals.
I’m gonna push back a little on the Trials. It’s already a near-2 week affair that’s far too long for everyone involved. (I know, I’ve covered it on multiple occasions.)
But that is on how the usatf structures the trials. The only reason for the trials to be more than two days with the current number of entrants is to give people that want to double a chance to be competitive.
A jam packed article! Congrats on your mile time, Mario! That is really, really fast! As always thanks for delivering the highest value newsletter to my inbox every Tuesday!
This is always a good reminder that there is more than just time on the watch (data)when analyzing races. But it’s so difficult to do. I recently took a two plus week vacation with no running only hiking Grand Canyon/Bryce and ran a disappointing half marathon three days after returning home. I’m trying to find the silver lining since I was two minutes off my last half, and had no second gear the last three miles.
I think that's pretty impressive Karen! Only hiking for 2 weeks, running so close to your last 1/2 (nevermind it being a totally different course/experience!) tells me you've built a solid foundation—try and build on it the next few months!

Brutal race conditions. Good work!
Thank you Karl! Throat was on fire for about an hour afterward.

Thank you so much Tyler! It means a lot to me that you get a lot out of it.
